(If you are an art student, if you are working in an art field or if you’re close to somebody who does, and especially if you are/know a graphic designer or an illustrator I would LOVE a moment of your time right now.)

Alright guys, I’ve finally done it. After a year of college and many years prior of suppressing it, stifling it, and generally agonizing over it, I’m changing my major.

And I’m going into art.

This has been the hardest decision I’ve had to make, because it rips and tears apart everything I’ve been told about going into something ‘respectable,’ something in the sciences or engineering or medicine. All my life I’ve been alternately petted for two things: high grades in school, and my art. I love biology with all my heart, but I love art every bit as much. I’ve had two people inside of me, fighting, for years; an artist and a scientist, and I’ve just chosen to shoot the scientist. Is that why I’m not leaping up and down for joy right now? I’m doing this because, I don’t know, there’s some kind of sentiment in my mind that if I were to go forward with bio I’d end up making minimum and being mediocre at my work (this is cold hard truth), while if I took the other path I could, maybe, just maybe, come to excel at what I do.

I know doing art for a living is not fun and games. I’ve heard, a million times, how it is, after a fashion, whoring out your skills, and how so many people come to abhor doing what they once loved. But if I never try, I will- I WILL- be haunted by the thought that I might have been okay with it, for the rest of my life.

I come onto dA and, although I realize the canon of this site is polite compliments, I’ve gotten really sincere feedback from some people, that they really believe I’m good at what I do and that I could take this farther. I’m nineteen, I started drawing in earnest at twelve, and if you’d told me then that someday I’ve have people sidling up to me, telling me that my art inspired them to draw, that they consider me among their art idols, or that someone would like my work enough to commission art from me, I would have told you to pull the other one. In fact, I have an over-active humility gland (as most of you know), and it’s hard for me to believe it even now. I know without the support of you guys I would never have been brave enough to do this, now I’m going to try.

When it comes down to art, guys, I want fire to fly from my fingertips, and I do, and will continue to, practice like a madwoman for that day. Math? Science? Meh. But art makes me crazy, and will put in endless hours to improve. There is no peak, there is no end, and every step is a victory in itself.

And now I’m getting poetic and silly, so let’s stop. Point is, at this time, I’d like some input. I’ve done my research online, and I’m planning to meet an art advisor this next week, but I also want another spin on things. If you are an art student, if you are working in an art field or if you’re close to somebody who does, and especially if you are/know a graphic designer or an illustrator, please, I wanna hear from you!

If you’re an art student I want to know how you feel about going to school for art- how is it going to class everyday to learn art? And where are you planning on going with it? I attend a public university in Idaho, USA; anybody else pursuing art in a big college? Is that a mistake?

If you’re in the field (or know somebody), I want you to spill the beans! The beans, the whole beans, and nothing but the beans! What’s it like? Are you a designer or an illustrator, or what? Was it hard to find work? What kind of education did you get before starting? How important is a degree versus your portfolio? Or if you just want to blab about your experiences, that’s very welcome as well! Frankly, any advice and any thoughts from the other side are gold to me right now.

Everybody else: HUGZ PLZ. I’m minorly scared shit-less that I’m finally doing this.

Your work is inspiring! I think you made the right choice to attempt a career in art. I wish you all the best in your new major! I'm currently taking animation at an art school and while it's a lot different than I thought it would be, I'm really beginning to see myself grow in my art and it's helping me kick my bad procrastinating habits. I hope you enjoy your time in school; you're gifted enough to go far and be successful.
